About the redesigned version

In January 2020, Slice Engineering released a brand-new version of the Mosquito™! This new version includes a redesigned heat break and a heat sink with innovative features. The new heat break has a reinforced neck and a redesigned cooler to prevent damage during installation or repairs. It is also equipped with the same WS2 anti-stick coating used on our Vanadium™ nozzles to further improve performance with PLA. The new heat sink has a wider opening for the filament path to better handle spliced filament from multi-material setups like the Prusa MMU or Mosaic Palette.

The old heat breaks and heat sinks are not compatible with the new ones. However, customers who want to upgrade can retrofit their Mosquito™ to the new features by purchasing both the heat sink and the heat break together.

The versatility of the Mosquito

The Mosquito is adaptable to almost any printer. By swapping one component, you benefit from the high-performance features of a printer that would cost thousands of euros. Since the Mosquito (designed for precision) and the Mosquito Magnum (designed for speed) have the same length, any combination of these hotends can be mounted on one carriage. This allows you to switch between high throughput and high precision in the same print.

And the best part: you can change the nozzle with just one hand.

When we talk about engineering plastics, we mean printing temperatures of up to 450 °C. This means you can print auto parts, medical devices, and anything else you can imagine without having to buy an oversized (and overpriced) printer.

Newly designed hotend

By redesigning the construction and structure of a hotend from the ground up, we have managed to optimize performance. The materials in each part of the Mosquito were carefully selected to fulfill a specific task and optimize your printer's performance with three goals: lightning-fast speed, beautiful resolution, and increased durability.

  • The heat break conducts 85% less heat into the heat sink than a typical threaded heat break.
  • Enables mounting the hotend with a printed plastic adapter without safety concerns.
  • The composite construction of the heat break allows the use of materials optimized for heat transfer in each section.
  • Reduced heat transfer eliminates the need for a large heat sink.
  • Steep temperature gradient at the heat break reduces the likelihood of clogs.
  • High tolerances along the filament path allow better transmission of fine movements, resulting in beautiful, high-resolution prints.
  • The heat break is separated from the structural components of the hotend, so it is non-load-bearing and can be very thin-walled.
  • No components at the mounting points are prone to loosening.
  • Nozzles can be changed with one hand (one tool) without gripping the hot block.
  • In case of a severe fall, no new hotend is required; parts can simply be replaced.
  • The specially developed high-temperature copper alloy in the hot block does not soften at temperatures above 550 °C.
  • Threads in the hot block do not deform at high temperatures, allowing nozzle removal even after multiple high-temperature cycles.
  • The nickel coating on the hot block reduces radiative heat loss and prevents thread sticking.
